Treasures in Heaven

19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. — Matthew 6:19-21 (NIV)

Defying Gravity: Break Free from the Culture of More

During the month of February, Paradise Valley United Methodist Church embarked on a church-wide stewardship program called “Defying Gravity.” We examined what pulls on us financially, and how we can break free of financial gravity’s hold to experience the freedom of generosity. On Sunday mornings, our worship looked at what the Bible and Jesus say about the subject, with passages from Matthew (Matt. 19:16-30; 25:14-30; 6:24-25 and 6:19-21) framing the messages from the pulpit. We also offered practical, spiritual challenges to help you consider your personal relationship with God, money, possessions, and giving.

Regular, faithful giving cultivates a lifestyle of generosity and connects our generosity to our blessings. It can bring great joy and freedom from what Rev. Tom Berlin calls “the culture of more.” He says that when we tether ourselves to God, we free ourselves from the need to hold on to material things. We feel God’s pull on us rather than the pull of earthly things and self-fulfiling desires.

Commitment Sunday

PLEDGE NOW

If you are unable to make a decision on Commitment Sunday, that’s ok. Pray about how God is calling you to support the church and fill out the online pledge form or return your card next week, or the week after. Budget planning occurs in May, so the sooner we have everyone on board, the sooner we can start planning our ministry for next year. Every gift matters.

You can set up recurring giving via your bank account or a designated credit card, or sign up to receive offering envelopes to give by check or cash in worship. Please refer to the pledge card in the pew pocket for all our giving options or call the church for assistance at 602-840-8360.

Family Card Packs

The church has distributed 100s of Family Card Packs ever since our campaign kick-off on Sunday, February 5. Never before has it been so much fun to break free of all our stuff! The Defying Gravity Family Card Pack includes 28 cards with daily activities to help you focus on the life you want one day at a time. Activities include cleaning out drawers, arranging closets, donating clothes and other life-changing exercises that puts you on the path to a vibrant and fulfilling life. It’s an experience to involve the whole family. The cards are designed to be used daily for 4 weeks. These were handed out in the back of the chapel, and on the patio after worship. It was amazing how quickly they went!

Zero-based Budgeting Workshop on February 19

The Coughlins led a 30-minute workshop on zero-based budgeting based on material from Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University on Sunday, February 19 at 10:45-11:15 am in H5, where Modern Family usually meets. JP and Jenn Coughlin led this brief session, teaching participants how to budget no matter if you have a fixed salary or an irregular income. Only 1 in 3 American families budget, but after just 3 months of detailed monthly budgeting, 84 percent of people say they feel more in control of their money. If you went, it was a great first step to Defying Gravity!
