Jesus spoke often about our loyalties and priorities in life. He was clear that no one can serve two masters. We sometimes think we can and fool ourselves. We try to juggle competing loyalties and demands and keep everyone happy. We simply cannot serve both God and money. We cannot serve God and any other loyalty (politics, career, pleasure, etc.). Our culture always pulls us to consume and buy. That’s a way financial gravity works on us. Most of us have more stuff than we need. We sometimes struggle to go through it and toss things we haven’t used or worn in years. Or we end up renting a storage locker to hold more stuff that cannot fit into our house. Or we have to spend money to buy things to organize all the stuff he things that won’t quite fit in our closets.
Breaking free from financial gravity requires some discipline. It requires some deliberate thought and planning, which we’ll talk about this Sunday. Underneath all of this, Jesus speaks to our anxiety about life that often catches up with us. He tells us “do not worry…” and reminds the disciples how God takes care of the birds and clothes the lilies of the fields. Jesus gives us an invitation to trust deeply in God, to know and live in confidence that God knows what we need. God knows better than anyone how to take care of us, day in and day out, through the good and through the difficult seasons of life. This Sunday, we worship our Lord, who can provide all that we need, at just the right time. We worship to practice and experience our trust in God, who has so much to give us and can certainly free us from financial gravity.
Zero-based Budgeting Workshop on February 19
You’re invited to a 30-minute workshop on zero-based budgeting based on material from Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University on Sunday, February 19 at 10:45-11:15 am in H5, where Modern Family usually meets. JP and Jenn Coughlin will lead this brief session, teaching you how to budget no matter if you have a fixed salary or an irregular income. Only 1 in 3 American families budget, but after just 3 months of detailed monthly budgeting, 84 percent of people say they feel more in control of their money. Join the Coughlins and learn how to take the first step to Defying Gravity!
