Resources Available

Pastoral Assistance and Support
Pastors are available for short-term counseling upon request.

Pastoral Visits or Calls
Pastors are on call 24 hours a day. After hours, the pastor on call can be reached by calling the church office at 602-840-8360 and following the answering machine instructions for reaching the pastor on call.

Stephen Ministry
Stephen Ministry is a program that equips lay persons to provide distinctively Christian one-to-one care to those who are experiencing all kinds of life needs and circumstances, both in our congregation and community. Persons going through divorce, financial crisis, family difficulties, illness and other problems find comfort and help in Stephen Ministers.

Stephen Ministers receive 50 hours of training in listening, building relationships, confidentiality, crisis theory and intervention, and use of prayer and the Bible. They work alongside our staff and clergy.

Prayer Support
A group meets Wednesdays at 11:30 a.m. to pray for needs received. All prayer requests are welcome, regardless of whether the person requesting the prayer is a member. With the requestor’s permission, requests are forwarded to phone and e-mail prayer chains. Cards are sent to persons on the Prayer List weekly.

Prayer Chapel
Paradise Valley United Methodist Church maintains a prayer chapel open 24 hours a day on campus. This small, intimate setting is always open for those who wish to pray. It is adjacent to the Biblical Garden.

Card Ministry
Once a month, volunteers write cards to homebound members.

Home Visits
Our pastoral staff, Stephen Ministers and non-staff volunteers (Caring Callers) will regularly call or visit in the homes of those unable to come to church.

VICAP
VICAP provides support services to those homebound or disabled, age 18 and over, and their caregivers. Volunteers provide calling, respite care, shopping, transportation, minor home repairs. Training is provided for volunteers. The VICAP office can be reached at 602-285-0543.

Homebound Communion
On the first Sunday of the month, Stephen Ministers take communion to those unable to come to church.

Shepherd Ministry
Volunteers provide meals for those who have a short-term need (new baby, death or hospitalization). They also offer help with food, hostessing and home watch during memorial services.

Flower Ministry
When flowers are available after Sunday worship, they are delivered to persons who are hospitalized or homebound.

Separation and Divorce Support
A ten-week seminar and support group for people who are separated or divorced is held in the spring and fall.

"Phoenix" Grief Support
A six-week class is held in spring and fall for those who have lost loved ones. Monthly meetings are held between times. Phoenix Rising, a grief support newsletter, is sent to those who are recently bereaved. We offer a Memorial Service of Light on the first Sunday in Advent to remember those who have died.
