John 1:1-5 New International Version (NIV)

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome[a] it.

Whether reading the King James, NIV or the NLT Bible, these words resonate with me. It says to me that God is life. God is not only the source of our human lives, he is the source of all life. When I reflect on these words, it reinforces to me that we honor God by living our lives fully and loving others extravagantly.

As we approach the day we celebrate Jesus’s birth, Christmas, it seems easier for some of us to reach out to our families, friends and those in need. But for others of us, it is a time of uncertainty and, in some cases, pain. For some of us, it is a very difficult time of the year. It’s hard to reach out.

I wonder what it would be like if we were each able to take a small step this holiday (Holy) season…
… a specific action of hope and extravagant love,
… a small action, not just for someone in our congregation, but for someone
outside our church who lives in darkness and despair throughout the year.

I believe we honor God when we act on our beliefs, and when we live full lives and love abundantly. If we take enough of these small, loving steps of action, they will become habits, both individually and corporately. I believe we will reach a place that God calls us to be in … a community of believers that shines brightly, impacting all who we reach and allowing us to transcend whatever boundaries we have established for ourselves.

What will I do right now to act on these words? Well, I’m really busy…
… surely those in need can wait a little longer for someone to light their path…
… I can take this small step of action next year …can’t I?

Don’t wait. Live for today and let tomorrow see to its own needs. “What is God calling you to do today?”

Prayer:  Generous God, who is always giving, help me live today, this moment, in your love.  Let me share; let me act as a member of your community of believers today.
