Isaiah 7:10-16 New International Version
10Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, 11”Ask the Lord your God for a sign, whether in the deepest depths or in the highest heights.” 12But Ahaz said, “I will not ask; I will not put the Lord to the test.” 13 Then Isaiah said, “Hear now, you house of David! Is it not enough to try the patience of humans? Will you try the patience of my God also? 14Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel. 15 He will be eating curds and honey when he knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right, 16 for before the boy knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right, the land of the two kings you dread will be laid waste.”
The Old Testament stories are full of famine, killing and war. The stories tell of the Hebrew people’s search for peace in a place to call their own. They spend years wandering in and out of alignment with God’s teachings. They suffer and turn from God. They wait for God to make their world perfect for them. Where is their Messiah?
Today, I witness parallels in this world…war, famine, killing…distrust, fear, and hopelessness. In situations all over the globe, I see daily power struggles between ‘God’s way’ and ‘the secular way’. Has anything changed? Is life any different today?
The answer is a definite YES! Today, we have a Guide… God’s promises fulfilled!
The Old Testament prophet, Isaiah, foretells that God will give a sign to his people: A Savior will be born into the world. I recognize that sign in the birth of Jesus Christ. As I walk through the days of advent, I am filled with awe at God’s sending His Presence to earth for me. I celebrate this time of waiting…
Waiting…for God’s Love to become real in our world.
Waiting…for His Spirit to fill the hearts of His children.
Waiting…for guidance from Immanuel.
