Hebrews 13:1-2 New Revised Standard Version
Service Well-Pleasing to God
13Let mutual love continue. 2Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it.
You never know who you will meet. We size strangers up just after a few seconds of meeting them. We decide if they are worth our time, whether they might be asking something from us, or if we want to further our acquaintance all according to our own intuition.
In actuality, we don’t know them. Advent time invites us to open ourselves to possibilities, and to not jump to judgments. The Christmas story reminds us that surprises do come wrapped in strange and unexpected ways. Living outside the box we have created might bring a new and welcome advent. We will never know if we don’t take the risk. Mary took a risk in responding to God’s messenger, “Let it be according to your will.” Joseph stepped forward in answer to news from the angel and took Mary as his wife. The shepherds heard a message from the angels that caused them to rush to a Bethlehem stable. And the Wise Men in accordance to their findings didn’t worry about appearing foolish, but traveled months to greet a new born king.
Take this time as we wait for the coming of God to open yourself to new possibilities and a gift sent to you from heaven itself. Receive others with joy and anticipation.
Prayer: God of Wonder and Surprises, help me open my hands to give, as I open my mind and my heart to the wonders you have prepared for me and for the world. In some small way, help me be a joyful, holy surprise to someone I meet today.
