Colossians 3:9 -10
Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.
Following our Example, Jesus Christ
I believe that God sent Jesus to earth as an example of how we are to live our lives, that we should be “renewed in knowledge after the image of the creator.” This does not, however, mean that we can expect to live as perfectly as Jesus did.
In Luke 13, Jesus tells the parable of the barren fig tree. After waiting three years with no fruit from the tree, the vineyard owner demanded that the tree be destroyed. But the man who cared for the vineyard wanted to give the tree another chance. He requested one more year to care for and nurture the tree. He wanted to give the tree a chance to live up to the expectations of the owner.
How often do we fail to follow the example that Jesus set for us? God has created each of us with gifts to use in the building up of His Kingdom. Sometimes we do a decent job of producing fruit. Many other times we do not live up to God’s expectations. I am so grateful that the Master Gardener is willing to give me another chance. And another and another!
Prayer: Loving and patient God, thank you for the example of Your Son, Jesus Christ, and for allowing us to keep trying to become examples of the love that he demonstrated.
