Luke 2:33 CEB
33 His father and mother were amazed by what was said about him
What parent would not be ‘amazed’ by hearing their young son called “your salvation” and “a light for revelation to the Gentiles”? Those were some of the words spoken by Simeon when Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to be presented at the Temple. Mary, who had given birth at such a young age, had very little understanding of who Jesus really was or what his life was to become, writes Mike Slaughter in ‘Christmas Is Not Your Birthday’. How could she and carpenter husband Joseph possible understand what they had heard?
How do we understand Jesus and his life and ministry today? In preparing for the celebration of the birth of the Christ Child this year, the Paradise Valley United Methodist Church community is focusing on ‘A Different Kind of Christmas’. Instead of concentrating on making Christmas perfect, with the right gifts, best decorations or most elaborate party, we want to follow the example of Christ by caring for those who have so little. Those who are hungry, sick, homeless and with little or no hope that their lives will improve.
While Christmas is a time of celebration and gift giving it is important to remember the most precious gift of all-God’s gift of His son, Jesus!
Prayer: Lord, may we bless you by living by your example of loving and caring for each other during this Christmas time and all year long. Amen.
