John 16:7 (CEB)
7 I assure you that it is better for you that I go away. If I don’t go away, the Companion won’t come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.
Here in the Phoenix area, it’s practically a necessity to have a car to get anywhere. We will spend lots of time this holiday season in busy traffic, getting from one shopping mall to another, taking the kids to events, going to parties, getting away to visit friends and family. In fact, we may spend all year doing and going and not being present here and now, not waiting and listening to what is all around us. There are some theories that we keep busy worrying about the future because we fear death.
In today’s verse, Jesus comforts his disciples who fear his going away and dying by gently explaining to them it is in their best interest. Jesus is foretelling the coming of the Spirit to be with us every moment. He is telling us we don’t have to be afraid. We can be here, now, with the Spirit sent to us by Jesus, and know that whatever has happened in the past and whatever may come in the future, He will be with us.
Jesus is also setting the example of giving rather than holding on. He is showing us that by giving of ourselves, by His giving His very life for us, He set us free from fear and death. Death will not end Jesus’ time with us; it will allow the Spirit He sends to us to be with us always. What better gift could we ask for?
Prayer: Dear Lord, quiet my mind and help me to listen and look for your Spirit in each moment of the day. Guide me to share your love with others as the Spirit calls me. Amen.
Thought for today: How does the Spirit appear in your life?
