Psalm 22:24 The Message (MSG)

22-24 Here’s the story I’ll tell my friends when they come to worship,
and punctuate it with Hallelujahs:
Shout Hallelujah, you God-worshipers;
give glory, you sons of Jacob;
adore him, you daughters of Israel.
He has never let you down,
never looked the other way
when you were being kicked around.
He has never wandered off to do his own thing;
he has been right there, listening.

The first 21 verses of this chapter reflect David’s utter agony. His life is full of pain; he feels scorned, mocked and hated by everyone around him.  No one offers him help – he cries out to the Lord to be with him as He was with his forefathers.

David’s words in this chapter are very foretelling of Jesus’ suffering in his last days. David speaks of his mouth being dry and being laid down in the dirt of death, while bad men mock him and cast dice for his coat. David pleads for God to be with him and feels lost and forgotten by God. Jesus’ words on the cross, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” echo David’s lament.

David reassures us, and himself, that God is always with us, by our side. David celebrates his relationship with God with others in the congregation, reminding everyone that God is with us through our daily trials.

All of us have times when we feel like David – mocked, scorned, worried, sick, despondent and discouraged. The treadmill of life keeps running and we struggle to keep up with life’s daily demands, wondering if it will ever get better. It is important to remember that God is always with us during these challenging times. He gives us what we need, when we need it, if we will reach out to Him.

I’ve always loved the poem, Footprints in the Sand.  Remember, the Lord is with you at all times.

Footprints in the Sand

One night I dreamed a dream.
As I was walking along the beach with my Lord.
Across the dark sky flashed scenes from my life.
For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand,
One belonging to me and one to my Lord.

After the last scene of my life flashed before me,
I looked back at the footprints in the sand.
I noticed that at many times along the path of my life,
especially at the very lowest and saddest times,
there was only one set of footprints.

This really troubled me, so I asked the Lord about it.
“Lord, you said once I decided to follow you,
You’d walk with me all the way.
But I noticed that during the saddest and most troublesome times of my life,
there was only one set of footprints.
I don’t understand why, when I needed You the most, You would leave me.”

He whispered, “My precious child, I love you and will never leave you
Never, ever, during your trials and testings.
When you saw only one set of footprints,
It was then that I carried you.”
