This Sunday, we continue our series called The Bible’s Greatest Hits with the passage of scripture known as the New Commandment: “I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another.” This is the commandment that Jesus gives his disciples not too long before he is arrested and led off to be crucified. It’s one of his final lessons to the ones who had followed him so closely.
It is also sometimes known as the “Love Commandment,” which has always sounded to me like a bit of an oxymoron; how do you command someone to feel something as selfless and vulnerable as love for another human being? Well, we know that Jesus didn’t say things like this lightly, especially his final earthly lesson. We know that Jesus was telling his disciples, and us, something very important.
Join us this Sunday as we look more deeply at this passage of scripture that we know so well we may not even notice it even more. Let’s look at what it means to be commanded by Jesus to love one another.
