Spring 2016 Plans

Many members in the Home Improvement Sunday morning group are in transition. Some of us have older children who are are maturing and leaving the nest, if they haven’t already. In an effort to respond to these changes and the availability of our group, class members at the December meeting agreed to test a change in frequency for our class from a weekly to a once-a-month schedule for the remainder of the spring 2016 semester. We are targeting the second Sunday of the month to meet as a class at our regular time in G2, the library. For all other Sundays, class members are encouraged to sit together as a group in the 9:30 am service on the far right in what we hope will become “the Home Improvement Pew,” to keep us connected on Sundays when we do not meet as a class. We hope you will plan to attend for discussion and fellowship, and invite a friend. All are welcome!

Sunday, February 14: Love Letters

Remember a special letter you’ve received and how it made you feel? Several heartwarming letters will be shared with the group, we’ll think about letters in the Bible, and devote the bulk of our time together to actually write a letter to someone special. You may choose to send the letter or pen a letter that could be given/read at a later date (like graduation, marriage, first grandchild, etc.) Bring stationery or a perfect card you’ve found with note paper to share and good ink pens. Modern Family and other church members are invited to join the Home Improvement Class to share a little love on Valentine’s morning!

Sunday, March 13: Lenten Reflection

We will take a look at one of the chapters in the NEW Lenten book study, 137 Miles: A Journey with Jesus, and use it as a springboard for our discussion.

Family Outing to The Phoenix Art Museum

The Phoenix Art Museum offers free admission on the second Sunday of the month, March 13, 12-5 pm. Read more.

If you go at another time, tickets are $15 adults, $10 students and $6 ages 6-17. Admission is free for children 5 and under, and for museum members. Those attending will decide whether we eat lunch at the museum café of go to local restaurant nearby.

Sunday, April 10: Lessons from Daniel

Local Pastor and teacher Tom Schrader leads Bible study through his Priority Living ministry. We will listen to an audio lesson on the Book of Daniel and look at the life lessons this biblical legend has for us. Bring your Bible.

Sunday, May 15: Save the Date

Join us for a yummy potluck and time for fellowship before summer break. We will save time for feedback on how the monthly HI meeting schedule is working.

REMEMBER: Please sit in the HI pew on the right side at the 9:30 am worship service for those Sundays when we do not have class.

SOCIAL OPPORTUNITIES: We need a class member to volunteer to take the lead on coordinating a date and RSVPs for these possible outings for our group:

  • Musical Instrument Museum Stradivarius exhibit through June 5th. This exhibit can be visited separately from the full museum entrance fee for $10, or there is a $7 add-on to the museum ticket if you choose to enjoy a longer visit to the museum. Hours are 9-5 daily.
  • Popnology at the Science Center through May 15th. This exhibit requires general admission with an add-on. Popnology entails creativity, imagination, pop culture, and technology, from robotics to 3-D printed limbs, to the very first cell phone.Hours are 10-5 daily. Read a story about popnology.

Other HI Information

We will be announcing our upcoming social events as planning comes together. If you have an activity that may be of interest to others in the group, email Lucy Gordon, our email coordinator. Small groups gathering around common interests outside of our class time is a fun way to stay connected. Think theatre, new restaurants for brunch, hikes, golf, volunteer opportunities, fun festivals, etc.

If you have a programming suggestion or a potential guest speaker, please contact John Lomax to get on the calendar.

We will continue to look for ways to partner with Modern Family and reconnect with those who have been unable to attend class this past year. We will also continue to share our joys and concerns, even when we are apart.

We cherish your prayers and support for this new season of HI as we continue to discover new ways to gather, support one another, stay connected, lead our families and serve God.

Invite a new friend to class or connect with someone you haven’t seen in awhile. Everyone is welcome at HI.

See you at church!
