VIP (Valley Interfaith Project) wanted to thank everyone who came to the community gathering at PVUMC on May 3 to talk about Prop 123 as well as prison reform, KidsCare and other items on their human development agenda. Don’t forget to vote on Tuesday, May 17, and, no matter what happens, please join VIP for a rally at the State Capitol Lawn to continue our fight to fund our schools in Arizona.

Here are the details:

#NowItStarts–Rally to Support Public School Funding, Thursday, May 19 at 4 pm, at the State Capitol Lawn
(note: time has changed from 3:30 pm).

Proposition 123 may be the first step, or no step, depending if it passes or fails. Funding for public education in Arizona is currently down about $1.1 billion from where it was before the recession. Prop 123, if it passes, will contribute funding of about $300 million a year. There is still a gap of $800 million. Each year. To handle this shortfall schools put more students into each class and ask families to donate day to day supplies. Teachers are leaving the profession, and leaving the state to find better paying jobs. Regardless of whether Prop 123 passes or fails, students, parents, educators, and all of us need to have a plan for how to deal with this out of balance situation. Join members of PVUMC’s Church and Society Ministry Team at the rally on May 19 to raise awareness and press for a long term solution. Directions and carpool information follow. Thank you for being God’s love in action for our children and educators.

The rally will take place on the Capitol lawn on the west side of 17th Ave., between Adams & Jefferson Streets (look for the dome). Approaching from the east on Washington St., Washington curves to the right and merges with Adams. Off Adams, you will see the entrance to a parking lot bordered on the west by 17th Ave. There is a larger parking lot on the west side of the Executive Tower (west of the dome), just east of 19th Ave. You can also get to this lot by taking the 19th Ave. exit off the I-10, and turning south until you see the Executive Tower.

If you want to carpool, meet in the PVUMC west parking lot before 3 pm. We will leave promptly at 3 pm.
