With all that happens in our world, we’re often asking ourselves, “What can we do to make the world a better place?” This Sunday, we are committed to doing just that. We will all be rolling up our sleeves to be God’s love in action at our annual Change the World Day, beginning at 8 am. We will take our love for God and express that in the most tangible way possible, by serving and helping others.
I know how good it feels when we give ourselves and make even a corner of God’s world a better place. Recently, The Center for the Future of Arizona released some fascinating information on volunteering. The best country in the world for volunteers? Turkenistan, where 60% of people volunteer. The worst? Egypt, where only 4% volunteer. Here in the US, it is 46% nationwide, and a bit lower in Arizona. You can help that percentage improve, this very weekend! I was also intrigued by their research on the countries most likely to help a stranger. You would do best in Libya, where 79% of people will help. You might not want to get stranded in China where only 24% will help a stranger. In the US, it is 73%, a healthy response, and actually, Arizona is 2 points higher than that. I’m glad we’re doing better!
The old monks had a Latin saying: laborare est orare, to work is to pray and to pray is to work. They are not mutually exclusive. Whether you are signed up for Change the World Day or not, come to worship this Sunday at 8:30 am. After our brief worship there will be a prayer service and communion for those who are staying on campus and would like to be part of an extended worship time. We’ll even have a wrap-up Celebration Lunch in the Fellowship Center after our morning of service. Join us this Sunday for a glorious day of caring for our community and each other. Help us be God’s love in action. Help us give the world a lift and know how much we and God care.
Click here to go to our SignUpGenius form, and see where we’ll be serving. The T-shirts have already been ordered, and we have a limited supply, so we can’t promise you one, but we encourage you to sign up in any available slot anyway. You’ll meet some great people, and we’re pretty sure you’ll have a good time and end up feeling like you’ve made a difference in someone’s life. If you can’t plan ahead and just decide to come on Sunday at the last minute, don’t worry; we’ll have plenty to do on campus. Come, Change the World with us!
