Ashley Snavley, Paradise Valley United Methodist Church’s organist and director of music and arts, plays organ at a recital Friday, May 5 at 7:30 pm, St Mary’s Basilica. The evening’s program is titled “Songs of Prayer and Praise.” Ashley is collaborating with two outstanding vocalists to present sacred music by composers such as Mendelssohn, Beethoven, Bach, Handel, Franck, and Gounod. Ashley is joined by soprano Dr. Nina Cole Garguilo, and tenor Thomas Strawser, who is also assistant music and arts director at PVUMC, for a rare performance of sacred Beethoven lieder, a famous Handel aria from the oratorio Samson, a Mendelssohn organ sonata based on the chorale Vater unser in Himmelreich (The Lord’s Prayer), and organ works by two 20th century American composers. The program will open and close with organ toccatas, including one celebrating the popular holiday that falls on May the 5th – Cinco de Mayo!
