The Love of Christmas
by Peggy Howard
In the past, God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways.
Christmas in our home was always a special time. We had an Advent candle in the middle of our table and lit the candles starting the first Sunday in Advent. My Dad, a Methodist minister, loved the holiday and spoke of the anticipation of Jesus’s birth. Love was his message and we all loved that idea and the Joy of the season.
The first Christmas after my Dad passed away, I asked our son Brad to set the Christmas Table. He was 5 years old and worked very carefully placing name cards and table service at each place. He had set a place at the head of the table for Grandpa, my Dad. To my surprise, when I came to the dining room table he told me, “Grandpa will be here in Spirit, even if he is in heaven with Jesus.” We kept the place at the head of the table that year and had a moment of silence for our wonderful Dad and Grandpa.
Christmas truly is about love, family, and precious memories. The Advent message speaks to us about Christ’s coming to be our Savior. We are urged to be spiritually awake to celebrate His birthday and to receive Him in faith.
Dear Lord, Christmas is a time of love, anticipation and the joy of Christmases past and present. May we treasure the special times as we celebrate your gift to us, Jesus Christ, and may we accept that gift of love. Amen.
