Christmas Looks Like This
by Pam Selthun
Matthew 19:14 (NIV)
14 Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”
Merry Christmas! As we celebrate Jesus’ birthday, we’re reminded that the kingdom of heaven belongs to children, who make this day so joyful.
The Refugee Assistance and Friendship Teams (RAFT) recently organized a Congolese Christmas party with the large refugee family who arrived from the Congo just over a month ago. They came with little children, and we welcomed them at the airport. They were tired and hungry, and we transported them to their apartment and gave them food.
On the night of the party, we brought desserts and shared in the fish and bread meal which the family provided. We had a mishmash of plates and cutlery, and some of us ate with our hands. There were candy canes and homemade ornaments, and angels, lights and colored paper garlands to decorate the tree.
As we gathered around the tree for a group photo (Keith Sobraske took the photo, though he organized the whole party), we smiled and shouted, “Merry Christmas!”
Merry Christmas to you, wherever you are and whatever you’re doing. Know that God loves each and every one of you, no matter where you call home.
Luke 2:10-11 (KJV)
10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
Prayer: Thank you, God, for sending Jesus to be with us. Thank you for sending your Son to show us the way, the truth and the life we can have when we accept your gift. Be with all those who are lost and lonely. Be with the strangers among us and help us to become friends. Be with the little children, who show us how to find the kingdom of heaven. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
