Join Habitat for Humanity Work Days in February and April, 2018

Habitat for Humanity Home Build
Saturdays, Feb 17 and April 28, 6:30am-2pm
The Mighty Methodist Coalition has partnered with the East Valley Presbyterian Coalition to build a home for a family of four, who are originally from Ethiopia. The build began Saturday, January 20, when a few volunteers from each church started framing the first floor walls. PVUMC has been invited to participate on two more Saturdays: February 17 and April 28. February 24 and March 17 are additional possible dates, as well as some work in June. For more information or to participate, please email, Don Wall, chair of the Missions Ministry Team at PVUMC.

Habitat provides all tools, tool aprons, and supplies. Work gloves are useful. Habitat requests that volunteers arrive 15 minutes prior to start time to sign in and attend the morning meeting. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old. New volunteers will need to fill out an annual Volunteer Information and Waiver form. This can be filled out in advance and turned in when you arrive, or filled out when you get there. A new form is required for each volunteer each year.

The family, who will be helping to build their home with the volunteers, shared their story with Habitat for Humanity of Central Arizona:

Nuruhussein Hussein and his wife, Sofia Mohammed, have lived in Arizona for 10 years and 5 years, respectively. They are originally from Ethiopia and primarily speak Amharic. They live in a two-bedroom apartment along with their son, Eyad (8) and Nuruhussein’s mother, Woderyeleash. The family struggles with overcrowding and longs for more space and privacy.

In addition to having issues with space, the family has had difficulty repairing the home. The landlord is unresponsive when notified and is slow to complete repairs once reached. In the past, the dining room ceiling was left open for two months when being worked on. In another instance, water from the neighbor’s sewage also seeped under the front door and penetrated their living room carpet; the family had a long wait for carpet replacement.
The family enjoys going to religious activities, taking walks and occasionally eating out together. Eyad loves basketball and the family enjoys watching basketball games as one of their favorite pastimes.

Nuruhussein works as a shuttle driver at a hotel and Sofia is a caregiver. The family heard about the housing program through friends. They’ve always wanted an affordable home that will provide stability and a permanent place to call home.

Our family is really appreciative of your help; thank you for your kindness in giving us this opportunity. — Hussein and Mohammed Family

The residence will be at 1937 E Don Carlos Ave, Tempe, AZ 85281.
