Preparing for and Living with Losses
The Caring Ministry Team at PVUMC offers a Journeys small group for those who are grieving or facing loss. Facilitated by Kathy Kramer-Howe and Tina Olson, the four-week class which meets at 12 noon on Wednesdays in H6, the Meditation Room, focuses on healthy ways to cope with grief as well as how to prepare for an impending loss.
Because we care and because we love, we feel losses deeply. Simply watching the news can keep us in a regular state of suffering for the world. Jesus and the scriptures support and sustain us during times of grieving, and this workshop includes Biblical support and prayer as well as additional strategies, information and tools to help us prepare for and survive significant losses and deaths in our lives.
Participants will learn about the neurobiology of grief and healthy ways to cope. While grief is unique to each of us, it can help to understand models of grieving, for ourselves and others close to us.
The class also includes resources and discussions about advance directives/living wills, healthcare proxies and different types of insurance. How to communicate effectively with those who are grieving and how to respond to another’s grief will be explored. You’ll be invited to share your personal journey of loss and grief as a way to find healing.
You’re encouraged to register by contacting Rev. Andrea Andress at the church office, firstname.lastname@example.org or 602-840-8360, ext. 142.
Every month, the church publishes Phoenix Rising, a newsletter designed for members and friends of Paradise Valley United Methodist Church who have lost a loved one. The January 2018 issue includes a week-by-week outline of the class. Click here to download.
Sara Bollman, a PVUMC member, has been the newsletter editor for over twenty years.
