As of August 1, 2018, Christopher Wurpts will be the new Associate Pastor of Modern Worship and Discipleship at PVUMC. In addition to supervising the Ignite worship service, he will be the staff liaison for the Living and Learning, Missions, and Diversity ministry teams. Christopher will also have various pastoral duties added to his plate. He will continue to oversee the youth ministry program, though he will not be directly involved in its day-to-day operation.
Instead, Sam Henderson, who has been promoted from the Squad 57 (5th-7th grade) Coordinator to the position of Youth Minister, effective July 5, 2018, will oversee the day-to-day operations of the youth ministry program, primarily focusing on the senior high students (grades 8-12). He will be leading the youth mission trip to Houston, TX this week, under Christopher’s guidance.
Rachel Smith has also been added to the staff and is now the new Youth Ministries Assistant, effective July 5, 2018. She will be working with Sam throughout the youth ministry program, but her primary focus will be on the Squad 57 program.
Both Sam and Rachel have proven themselves to be capable, passionate youth leaders within our church throughout the last two years. This promotion for both of them seemed like a natural fit, and their skills and talents are just what our young people need at this time. I am excited for what God has in store for this program.
An e-mail was released on Wednesday, July 11, 2018 to parents and students in our youth ministry program to notify them of these changes. It was included in the July 13, 2018 From Paradise Enews, and will be announced in the August/September 2018 issue of the Desert Scroll, which is also in transition. Look for less printed copies and fewer pages with this next issue.
A formal announcement about changes to the youth ministry program will be made in worship on Sunday, August 12, a week before our kick-off Sunday. On Sunday, July 29, Desert Southwest Conference District Superintendent Susan Brims will present Christopher with his “license to preach” and announce his appointment to PVUMC by Bishop Robert Hoshibata. Join us that Sunday at 9:30 am, when we’ll also recognize Sally Hecht and Roanne Wallace for receiving the Bishop’s Award at this past Annual Conference as well as recognize and bless our church leaders. Read more about these awards.
Dave Henderson, chair of Church Council, will share the message at 9:30 am and Ignite worship, “The State of the Church.”
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or comments about the youth staff transitions or the youth mission trip to Houston.
