The Desert Scroll newsletter has been in publication since February 1961. The first issue was mimeographed and mailed to 48 households. In 2013, the church newsletter went from a monthly to a bimonthly publication and has been available in both printed and digital form ever since. Also in 2013, Paradise Valley United Methodist Church decided to go green and asked our subscribers to consider digital delivery over snail mail. Back then, it was mailed to 1,250 households. In July 2018, we mailed the newsletter to 365 addresses and emailed it to 750.
Recent budget cuts and a desire to be better stewards of our church resources and of the earth have prompted a bigger change. In an effort to be even more environmentally friendly and more cost-conscious, we have decided to go green again and reduce or eliminate our printed publication.
After the August/September 2018 issue, we will no longer offer subscriptions via snail mail, or the US Postal Service. We have converted as many snail mail subscriptions as possible to email. If we have an email on file for you, you will not receive an August/September 2018 issue in the mail. However, you will receive it via email from firstname.lastname@example.org. If we do not have an email address on file, but you would still like to receive the Scroll, please email us at email@example.com and we’ll make sure you’re added to the email subscription list.

The church will have a limited number of printed copies of the August/September 2018 issue available in the kiosks on the church campus. These are intended for visitors and friends who may want to know more about our programs and ministries or for those who have no access to a computer or smartphone. The Desert Scroll gives a big picture view of what the church is doing. It highlights many of our ministries and programs, explains changes to staff or ministries, and has space to share the joys and concerns of PVUMC members. The Scroll also includes a financial report and a Pastor’s Message, which often focuses on our mission and vision, and plans for the future.
In 2015, the church adopted a new brand identity. Our publications were redesigned to reflect our refreshed brand. The redesign of the newsletter occurred with the April/May 2016 issue. The full-cover, image-rich publication enjoys a wide readership and was rated among the top five ways you get information about the church in the recent June 2018 Communications Survey. Rather than eliminate the Scroll right away, or at all, we decided to reduce the number of pages from 12 to 8 and see if we could reduce or eliminate the printed copies. This format will continue through 2018 and possibly beyond.
As always, we strive to be good stewards of our time, talents and treasure. Writing and publishing the Scroll does take staff time every other month and requires the talents of staff and volunteers who can plan, write, edit, design and proofread. The treasure we have will be used, as always, to support our mission and vision. No printed copies will mean less paper, less waste, and more trees. These are good things.
