The church offers Advent book studies as a part of Journeys, small groups at PVUMC. You’re encouraged to preview the books after worship, stop by Serendipities, the church gift shop, or the church office, where you can also purchase books. The books are also available at online booksellers.

Names for the Messiah

One of the Advent studies is Names for the Messiah by Walter Brueggemann. Based on Isaiah 9:6, this study will tie in with our Sunday worship series, focusing on the titles of Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace for Jesus.

Walter Brueggemann is known as an Old Testament scholar with a progressive outlook. Watch this chat between two Christian scholars as they talk about biblical prophets, like Isaiah, and where we can find prophetic hope today despite human pain and suffering. “God’s hopes are to be performed through human agencies.” — Walter Brueggemann (Produced by Sojourners.)

Another option is Faithful, Christmas Through the Eyes of Joseph, by Adam Hamilton. This book is a DVD study. See the book trailer and a preview with the author on YouTube:

Off-Campus Advent Studies

In addition to the many small groups who will be following one of the Advent studies on campus, several others will study one of the books in members’ homes. A list of on-campus and off-campus groups is available in the church office and gift shop, where books are sold, or download a copy here.
