Paradise Valley United Methodist Church (PVUMC) is delighted to welcome the Syrian Sweets Exchange Phoenix for holiday orders and deliveries just in time for Christmas! Local Syrian bakers came to campus Sunday, December 16, 2018, to take holiday pre-orders for Christmas goodies. The congregation was invited to sample items, including baklava, mamool date-filled treats, and gluten-free bite-sized pieces before purchasing. Gift boxes ranged from $15 to $50.
The sale was very successful, and reportedly $1,285 worth of orders were taken, which will be delivered on Sunday, December 23, 2018, just in time for Christmas!
The orders will be filled by one baklava baker and one mamool baker. The income from the sales will help both families this holiday season.
All sale proceeds go directly to the bakers to help them support their families. The ultimate goal is for these refugees to find employment in the baking industry or open home bakeries or other small businesses. Thank you for showing your support and solidarity with Syrian members of our community through your purchases. Venues like this help foster positive cross-cultural interactions and build understanding and friendship through home-baked sweets.
PVUMC has supported Syrian refugees through its RAFT (Refugee Assistance and Friendship Teams) program since 2016. Last October, our church hosted a Syrian Sweets event, and plans to do it again in 2019. Bake sales generate income for the bakers and introduce Syrian families to the wider community. Proceeds from the bake sales go directly to the families of the bakers to help them pay for living expenses.
Thank you for supporting refugees and Syrian Sweets Phoenix!
