God’s Love in Action: Past, Present, and Future
We have been blessed with a great heritage at PVUMC. And we are blessed because God has a great future for us. I doubt those who founded PVUMC could foresee the remarkable ministry that happens here every day. God touches and changes lives through our church and God wants to bring a reign of love through us. Through our witness, we are God’s love in action. Through our missions and compassion and our work for justice, we are God’s love in action. Every prayer we offer and every testimony of faith we share from the youngest to the oldest show God’s presence here.
I think of all the elements that make up our church and all the ways that God’s spirit moves through us. God moves through the hundreds, maybe thousands, of selfless acts of kindness and caring, the ways we help others, the many prayers we offer as well as the larger things we do and celebrate, like Change the World Day, paying $340,000 per year in apportionments for shared ministry across the UMC, our multiple and grand worship experiences on Christmas and Easter, and our regular worship services each weekend that help us to meet and know God.
As we think about our future, I want to ask you a question: Does your faith encourage you to take risks? Taking a risk for God’s kingdom is a good thing. Our church has done that at times, when we needed to build new facilities, start new ministries, hire new people or take a stand on a tough issue. I like to think that God has invested in us and that we have invested in our church ministries to help God’s Kingdom grow.
God gives abundantly to us, including the gifts and talents that we treasure and use. God wants these gifts used to grow God’s Kingdom. Religion is in decline and fewer people claim Christianity as their faith, yet God remains faithful and encourages us daily to use OUR gifts of faith, vision, and all-embracing love in fresh ways to extend and share God’s love with everyone we meet. God does not want us to sit on these gifts, but put them to work and take a chance in using them.
This Sunday as we wrap up our giving campaign we encourage a deep and faithful commitment from every one of us. We give to the church because God has given so much to us. God is loving, forgiving and gracious, and asks us to show love, compassion, forgiveness, and grace to those around us. Our gifts to the church and to the ministry we do here in this place are an expression of gratitude to God. We ask you to be generous to God’s church here in the hope of building a future that God desires in Paradise Valley.
