Giving Philosophy

Why We Give to PVUMC

As for those who in the present age are rich, command them not to be haughty, or to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but rather on God who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share, thus storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of the life that really is life. — 1 Timothy 6:17-19

When you pledge your support to Paradise Valley United Methodist Church by giving of your time, talents and treasure, you help us plan our budget and allow our ministries to grow responsibly. Regular, faithful giving cultivates a lifestyle of generosity and connects our generosity to our blessings. It can bring great joy. John Wesley, the founder of our faith, said, “Earn all you can, save all you can, give all you can.” His words ring true for us at PVUMC as we try to be good stewards of all that God has entrusted to us.

Stewardship and Generosity

Giving is a part of our relationship with God and Jesus Christ. We strengthen that relationship when we give our time, talents and treasure to God, who has entrusted us with these gifts. We call this stewardship.

We believe that everything we have comes from God, and we are called to give back a portion to build God’s kingdom on earth. The pie chart below shows where the money you give to PVUMC goes:

Staff, facilities and apportionments are distributed to respective ministry areas.

Connectional Giving through Apportionments

As United Methodists, we believe in Connectional giving. When all of us give, we can do so much more. Everyone who gives to PVUMC supports the vital ministries that show God’s love in action at PVUMC, in the local community and in the world. With 12.5 million United Methodists living in 136 countries, we transform lives through every dollar we give.

According to, United Methodists gave more than $140,000,000 to support various ministries of the denomination in 2017, and right here at PVUMC, we paid 100% of our share to support worldwide UMC missions and programs.

Connectional giving is through Apportionments, which allow the people of the United Methodist Church to do together what we cannot do alone. Apportionments are the amount that each individual church community is asked to pay in order to support the ministry of the people of the UMC as a whole; in other words, the apportionments that our church pays help support regional (local), national, and international missions. In the pie chart above, our gifts to missions account for 28% of the whole. Apportionments are one of many ways that the United Methodist Church comes together to share the Good News of Jesus Christ.

How much does PVUMC pay in Apportionments?

Apportionments are calculated using a formula based primarily on the number of members and our spending. See how much PVUMC paid in apportionments last year. When you give, you help PVUMC provide for connectional giving to the United Methodist Church.

Where are Apportionments spent locally and worldwide?

The World Service Fund is the heart of our collective Church ministry. Individuals partner with church agencies to be in mission and ministry here and around the world. The Ministerial Education Fund equips annual conferences, theological schools, and the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (GBHEM) to meet the need for increased resources for the recruitment and education of persons for ordained ministry. The Annual Conference supports leadership and administrative support for faith communities’ outreach and discipleship programs. Funds are also provided to the Claremont School of Theology, the Arizona Faith Network, the Black College Fund and campus ministries. Read More at
