Devotional Blog - Advent 2017

PVUMC’s 2017 Advent Blog

Advent Daily Devotional

Beginning December 1, we will offer daily devotions during Advent. To receive daily posts, enter your name and email address in the form at the right (or below if you’re on a mobile device). To read the devotionals on the blog, click on the post headline in the section below to read the devotional for the day (you may also want to bookmark this page for easy reference). We invite you to share these devotionals with your friends via tweets, email and on your Facebook page. Use the buttons on the left side of the page to easily share. We also invite you to leave comments, especially if there’s a question at the end of the blog post. We hope this will be a way to share our personal Advent experiences and invite others to do the same.

Advent Study

PVUMC offers two church-wide Advent studies this year:

Journey to the Manger: Exploring the Birth of Jesus
Cost: $15; Author: Paula Gooder

Because of Bethlehem
Cost: $11; Author: Max Lucado

Classes who are following these books are listed below and in the Journeys 2.0 guidebook. Books are available in the church office and via the class leaders.

Kim Summers offers an alternative to the above Advent studies: Faithful Christmas through the Eyes of Joseph by Adam Hamilton. This study is part of the “Growing Together in Our Walk” class, which meets most Wednesdays, 6 pm in the Fireside Room/F8. Books are $14, and available in the church office or via Kim Summers. No class 12/20.

Interested in a joining a study group at someone’s home? We have three open home-based study groups at members’ homes: the Quinns, the Wittigs and the Summers. If you are interested in either hosting or participating in a home study group, please contact Rev. Andrea Andress, via email at andrea@pvumc.org or call 602-840-8360, ext 142.

You may purchase books online by using “GIVE NOW” at our website. Choose “Other” from the drop-down menu, and type “Advent book” in the Comments section. Show your email receipt to the front office as proof of purchase.

On Sundays during the season of Advent, December 3-24, 2017, the clergy will preach on the theme of “Coming Home,” touching on the things that bring us back home for the holidays and the emotions we feel when we’re home, including hope, grace, acceptance and love.

The stories in our daily Advent devotional blog touch on the “Coming Home” theme and offer different perspectives on what family, traditions, and Christmas means to us and others. How does God promise the gift of hope? How does God accept us and offer us grace even when we don’t deserve it? How does the Christmas story of Jesus coming into the world as a newborn baby change your view of who God is and what he expects from each one of us?

You are invited to contribute a blog post by emailing Kim Summers. Include a title, a scripture verse or passage from the Bible, and a short closing prayer. The entry should be 200-500 words long. Questions? Email paradisevalleyumc@gmail.com.

Advent study groups are listed listed below and on the website calendar.

December 17, 2017: Advent Story – A Mystery at the Heart of the Incarnation

La Sagrada Familia, Gaudi’s great cathedral still under construction in Barcelona, Spain, is a sight to behold. Its facades tell stories about Christ’s birth and God’s great love, as well as the suffering which existed in Jesus’ world, just as it does today. Yet, through it all, God assures us of his unconditional love through the gift of his son, Jesus.
